In The Fellowship of the Ring:
When the Fellowship travelled through Moria, they found a side chamber that housed Balin's Tomb. Next to the tomb was found the Book of Mazarbul. Gandalf read the book and found it to be a journal of Balin's return to Moria to reestablish the Dwarven colony. The book told of steady progress for five years before Balin's death and the eventual downfall of the Dwarven colony as it was overrun by Orcs.
