In The Fellowship of the Ring:
After the Fellowship reached Rivendell, Arwen gave Aragorn the pendant as a symbol of her having already chosen to give her heart
to him.
In The Two Towers:
As they travel from Edoras to Helm's Deep, Eowyn asked Aragorn
about the pendant. He remembered trying to return the pendant to Arwen before the Fellowship left Rivendell, but she refused to take it back.
Not long after, Saruman's Wargs attacked the Rohirrim and the pendant was pulled from his neck during the fight.
When Aragorn arrived at Helm's
Deep, Legolas returned
the pendant to him.
