In The Two Towers:
Arod was given to Legolas by Éomer after his rider was killed in the raid on the Uruk-hai Camp. Arod also often ended up carrying Gimli. Arod carried Legolas into battle both against the Wargs and at Helm's Deep.
In The Return of the King:
Arod carries Legolas to Dunharrow, but refuses to go through the Paths of the Dead.
