In The Fellowship of the Ring:
The moth comes to Gandalf while he is trapped on the top of the Tower of Orthanc. Gandalf gently grabs the moth, whispers a message to it and lets it go. Eventually Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles, comes and rescues Gandalf.
In The Return of the King:
The moth comes to Gandalf during the battle before the Black Gate of Mordor. Immediately after, the Eagles arrive and battle the Winged Beasts, which helps turn the tide of the battle.
