Origins of the Balrog:
The Balrog is an ancient servant of Morgoth that fell into evil when Morgoth opposed the Creator. It is an even older evil than Sauron, who was another servant of Morgoth in the earliest days of Middle Earth. It went to dwell under the mountains long before Sauron rose to power for the first time.
